The Iceland Whalebone Project

 The Iceland Whalebone Project

I recently went to a lecture on upcoming trends "heimtextil". One of the things (mentioned in passing) that caught my attention was The Iceland Whalebone Project.

"A workshop in Iceland with designer Brynjar Sigurðarson was the starting point for a series of pieces using bleached whale bone created by Product Design Master students of ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne".

Seventeen Master students and designer Brynjar Sigurðarson’s worked together to create sculpture, furniture and art from the remains of stranded whales. Approximately fifteen whales are washed up every year, traditionally every part of the mammals body would have been used, now they lay discarded.

According to Brynjar: ‘the idea was to collect various types of bones on the beach, but also shark skin or teeth, or even bits of plastic waste. From this starting point, the ECAL students who had come from all corners of the earth, were supposed to draw on the atmosphere of this particular environment to create objects.’

I am always interested in projects to re-use, recycle or re-purpose discarded or unwanted materials. Particularly when they are made into such beautiful items.
