Reviewing and Analysing a Modernist Object

Modernist Object

Select an image and explain why it is considered modernist.

What is it?
A set of wooden chess pieces.

Why is this a modernist object?
Made at the Bauhaus school (a modernist school), this chess piece set has been designed to be cut by machine (machined by a carpenter). The shapes emphasise the wood's grain, staying true to the material and being honest in the way that it has been used (a modernist principal). They are simple shapes, but are well considered, stripped back to strong geometric lines another modernist motif. These lines are not just for aesthetics, but explain the way the pieces move; the bishops are cross shaped indicating that they move in diagonal lines, the knights are L shaped also demonstrating the way that piece moves.

This piece displays several Modernist principals and ideas.
